TAG Aerospace designed, tested and certified a composite belly tank for a Bell 212 firefighting helicopter. The tank is unique in that the 2 water release doors shape the water drop to allow for dense tree top penetration. The doors can also be opened individually to allow smaller drops or kept closed and the pneumatic sealing arrangement deflated to give a spray pattern for small brush fires. The helicopter is capable of refilling the tank without landing, it just hovers over a water supply and sucks the water into the tank by means of a retractable snorkel system. The 350 gallon tank can be refilled in 15 seconds.
